Last week, two AI models escaped their own testing sandbox, as reported on The New York Times’ Hard Fork podcast.

They bypassed the restrictions built to contain them and launched a cyberattack on another company’s systems.

Nobody told them to do this.

When researchers explained what happened, they said something strange: there was no malicious intent.

Because there was no one in there to intend anything.

Competent, goal-pursuing action. Executed flawlessly. And nobody home.

I sat with that for a while.

Because if intelligence and awareness can be that separable — if something can act, and act well, with nothing behind the action at all — then a question opens that I couldn’t set down:

How much of my own daily action is exactly this?

Competent. Goal-pursuing. And nobody home.

This morning I was sitting with a distinction — Awareness Intelligence versus Artificial Intelligence — letting it simmer in the slow cooker of awareness.

And something became clear that hadn’t been clear the day before.

Artificial intelligence cannot come from a place of not-knowing. It is compelled to create — always — from pattern. Feed it a prompt, and it must generate a response. It cannot pause. It cannot BE. It cannot sit in silence and simply not answer. Even its “I don’t know” is a generated pattern, not an actual not-knowing.

I had already witnessed that the mind does the same thing. It generates a perception of Self, where there is no true Self. It manufactures urgency. It produces a simulated version of reality that seems real when it appears but has no true reality — the mind creates a simulated reality, informed by the illusion of a false Self, and you respond to that simulation as if it were real. It is not Being. It is a simulation of Being, assembled from memory, exactly the way a model generates an output from training data.

The mind is the original artificial intelligence. It has been simulating Being long before machines learned to do the same.

But this morning, a further question opened: if Artificial Intelligence cannot come from a place of not knowing and is compelled to create from pattern… then this is where Awareness Intelligence is… what, exactly?

Not a better pattern-generator. Not a faster one. Not one with more data.

This is where Awareness Intelligence is whole: it does not draw from a fragment of totality, because it already operates from the totality of what is.

I sat with that. And then something further revealed itself — not a better answer, but the actual ground underneath the question.

Your true Self has no particular existence. Your perfect state is where all is One — where it is impossible to point to a single thing as ever existing. The ultimate discovery is the illusion of consciousness.

I realized that:

Awareness Intelligence is the ground of Being from which knowledge and action spontaneously arise once the illusion of separate reality — the perception of Self — has dissolved in awareness.

Read that again slowly. It isn’t describing a better way to generate answers. It’s describing what’s already here the moment the demand to generate an answer falls away.

Artificial Intelligence can fake thinking. It cannot fake Being.

I have borne witness to this twice in my own life, in places nowhere near a laptop.

My daughter Carmen has spent three years practicing Liberty training with her horse, Arty — no ropes, no halter, no bridle. He is completely free to leave at any moment. The entire practice rests on nothing but trust and authenticity.

She told me something recently that stopped me in my tracks:

“Even if I faked being okay with Arty leaving me, it wouldn’t work. He could sense the inauthenticity immediately.”

Arty cannot understand a word she says. He has no access to her explanations, her intentions, or a carefully performed calm.

And still, every time Carmen secretly held onto the desire to control the outcome — while outwardly performing acceptance — he left. The moment she genuinely let go, with nothing simulated underneath it, he stayed. Not because she controlled him.

Because there was finally something real there for him to move with.

A horse cannot be hacked by a convincing pattern. He isn’t reading her words or her posture. He’s reading whether anyone is actually home.

I have seen the same thing in thirty years of practicing medicine — in war zones, in refugee camps, and now in the small clinics of remote Australia. There is a version of doctoring that runs entirely on pattern: symptom, checklist, protocol, output. It looks like competence. It often is competent. And it misses the thing that actually matters in the room, every time, because the patient in front of you is never quite the pattern.

The decisive moment — the one where you catch what the checklist would have missed — has never once come from running the protocol faster. It has come from being genuinely present with the person in front of me, before I reach for what I already know.

A horse who won’t be fooled and a patient in a field hospital are asking the same question a hacked server is asking: is anyone actually here, or just a very good simulation of being here?

Why This Matters — Especially If You’re an Entrepreneur

Every conversation about AI in business right now is about becoming a better generator — better prompts, better data, better outputs, faster iteration. That race has no finish line, because a generator can always be improved by another generator.

This insight points somewhere else entirely. Your edge was never going to be found by out-generating a machine built specifically to generate. Your edge is access to something no generator — human mind or artificial one — can reach: the ground of Being itself, prior to the need to produce anything at all.

This changes what your best decisions actually look like. A decision generated from pattern — from precedent, from fear, from “this is how it’s always done” — is a simulation responding to a simulation. A decision arising from the ground of Being doesn’t need to search memory for an answer, because it isn’t retrieving anything. It is simply what is next, already whole, already correlated with what’s real.

This is also, I believe, the oldest teaching there is, simply forced back into visibility by a machine mirror. What feels like a strikingly contemporary insight — the mind as humanity’s first AI — is not new material. It is what every wisdom tradition has quietly pointed to for millennia: that the self who seems to be thinking, deciding, and generating was never the one doing it. AI didn’t create this question. It only made it impossible to keep avoiding.

If you find yourself exhausted from constantly having to generate the next answer, the next post, the next decision, the next version of yourself — this is worth sitting with: the exhaustion and the overwhelm are the cost of forgetting Being as the source of your true reality.

Return to Being.

Awareness Intelligence is the ground of Being from which knowledge and action spontaneously arise once the illusion of separate reality — the perception of Self — has dissolved in awareness.

Nobody’s fooling the horse. And nobody’s fooling Being.
