I was awake and got up at 2:30 am. After organizing myself to pack my stuff to depart to the airport, I wanted to respond to correspondence and complete several tasks I had set myself — but felt resistance doing so.
This is a familiar resistance, in particular when I feel tired and have already done some work.
How interesting!
I am committed to being productive even if I don’t feel like it, so I was wondering: what was holding me back from just taking the next step and getting started with my task?
What is this thing — or non-thing — that I call resistance?
Was it simply that I felt “tired,” or was there something hiding in the obviousness of the experience?
I realized that what was holding me back was the perception of Self that was familiar.
The tiredness itself was a reminder of a habit — the habit of experiencing myself.
When I examined the thoughts arising alongside this resistance to action, they were:
“You can’t do it.”
“It is too much.”
“You are tired.”
“It is too much effort.”
I thought, “Who is telling me all of this? Do I believe all of this stuff?!”
I realized that everything is governed by the perception of Self — i.e., the perception of a doer where there is none.
I decided to take action and finish my tasks despite the resistance, and do it anyway. It felt uncomfortable at first, but while in action, these considerations dissolved.
What actually happened here?
Taking action and not being located in the experience of a doer, I take action from a place of awareness.
Taking action from a place of awareness renews me. It purifies. It erases the memory of a perception of Self that wants to hold me back.
Return to Being.
Why This Matters — Especially If You’re an Entrepreneur
The mind sabotages you and uses up your time, your attention, your resources in two ways: keeping you captured in a familiar sense of Self, and by creating a false sense of urgency, the mind keeps you hooked in its creations (read the article “Nothing Is Actually Urgent”).
By applying the Awareness Method, you get to allow for it, so you can see it in its totality and see it for what it is, and decline to identify with the experience it is giving you.
The opportunity is to take action on what inspires you, what has you be on purpose in your business and in your life — rather than being intimidated and stopped by the mind that tells you all kinds of things that keep you with the familiar, which, in truth, doesn’t even have any reality.
Each time you say to yourself:
“I will do it, but this is not the time for it.”
“I am not ready yet, I don’t feel like it.”
“It feels odd to do it now. I usually do different things around this time.”
“I have a habit of spending my time a certain way around this time. I will do it later when I have time for it.”
“This is not the time for it. I’ll do it later.”
— you buy into the habit of the perception of Self, which is just an illusion.
If it feels strange that you are not “yourself” when you take action while experiencing resistance, don’t worry about it. You are a tower of strength. You are not going to collapse or fall apart by experiencing a bit of discomfort. Chances are you’ll feel more connected to life when you step out of your comfort zone.
You can be effortlessly productive by stepping out in awareness and leaving the perception of Self that holds you back behind you.
With the application of the Awareness Method, you become effortlessly productive.
It takes no effort to step into awareness and just take action. If you really want to evaluate what it feels like to take action, do this while you take action — not from a place of consciousness that only deceives you with its narrative.
